Cover Up

I must say, things look better around Northern Virginia because of the snow!Snow Covered Trees

Before we were visited with a blanket of white fluff, there were just barren trees and dead leaves for outdoor decoration.   But now the dead of fall has been covered with the white of winter.  Today the sun is brilliantly reflecting off a blanket of snow.  It looks great!

King David had a lot that he wanted to cover up.  In one chapter of the Bible (2 Samuel 11), he essentially broke all 10 commandments.  Included in his list of transgressions was an affair with his neighbor’s wife and premeditated murder against his neighbor.

But look at what he prays in Psalm 51:7:  “Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.”

How can he pray for such a thing?  How can a liar, murderer, and adulterer such as himself expect that he will be “whiter than snow” in God’s sight?

Because he knew that a Savior would come into the world to wash away his sins.  He knew the promises of God that the Messiah would come as a sacrifice for all.   And he knew that the grace, mercy, and compassion of God was so great, that forgiveness was his.  He knew that the perfection of the Messiah would cover every imperfection of David.   And with the light of God shining upon him, he would look cleaner and whiter than snow in His sight.

This is what the Messiah, Jesus, has done for you, my fellow murderers, thieves, adulterers, abusers, addicts, liars, and cheats.  His blood, shed on the cross, has paid for your sins.  It has washed them away from your record in God’s sight.  It has made you to look whiter than snow in God’s eyes.  The decay of your sin has been covered by the gleaming white perfection of Jesus.

You look great to God, even whiter than snow, because of the Savior!

Redeemed and redecorated by God, just like you,

Pastor Jon Bergemann
